Pundits keep repeating that Islam is fundamentally incompatible with the West. It gets louder every year. But they rely on total historical amnesia to make that claim work. The West owes a massive debt to the Islamic world for algebra, modern medicine, the experimental method, and the very concept of the university. We just edit this out of our textbooks to fit a modern political narrative.
Look at the Library of Congress. The mural on the dome of the main reading room maps out the pillars of human progress. The figure they painted to represent Physics is Islam. Literally.
Historians and actual scientists have known this forever. They don't hide it. Just look at the historical record.
George Sarton, one of the pioneers of the history of science, made it clear: "The main, as well as the least obvious, achievement of the Middle Ages was the creation of the experimental spirit and this was primarily due to the Muslims down to the 12th century."
Carl Sagan backed that up entirely: "In the dark ages of Europe, the scientific tradition was kept alive, and advanced, in the Islamic world."
Even King Charles III admitted it during a speech at Oxford: "If there is much misunderstanding in the West about the nature of Islam, there is also much ignorance about the debt our own culture and civilization owe to the Islamic world."
You can't just erase centuries of foundational science because it makes for an inconvenient soundbite today. History is what it is.
